Union's Prop 8 spending counteracts educator contributions

A recent National Public Radio report by Robert Benincasa found that while the California Teacher Association (CTA) spent $1.25 million to defeat Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage, educators in the state (whom CTA supposedly represents) actually supported the ban.

According to Benincasa, “Teachers, aides and counselors in California public school systems gave about $2 to support the marriage ban for every $1 they gave to oppose it. The educators gave some $450,000 in individual contributions to advocates supporting the ban and about $210,000 to those opposing it, according to the NPR analysis.”

California voters approved Prop 8, but despite evidence of teacher support, CTA continues to actively fight the ban, recently filing an amicus brief against enactment of the law.
