Chicago’s Arne Duncan named Education secretary-designate
President-elect Barack Obama on Tuesday announced Chicago schools chief Arne Duncan as his selection for United States Secretary of Education. If confirmed, Duncan will replace current Education secretary Margaret Spellings at the post.
A Harvard graduate, Duncan was selected as the director of Chicago’s magnet schools in 1989, and was promoted to the position of schools chief in 2001. Prior to his service in Chicago’s public schools, Duncan directed the Ariel Education Initiative, a mentoring and tutoring program.
