OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, a non-profit organization that recognizes and encourages academic excellence in Oklahoma’s public schools, is seeking nominations for its new Oklahoma Award for Outstanding Achievement in Alternative Education.

The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the
U.S. Constitution provides: “Congress shall make no law respecting
an establishment of religion.”
Although the proper meaning of these few words has been debated for
over two hundred years, perhaps nowhere else in our society has the
debate concerning the proper relationship between religion and government

OKLAHOMA CITY — Applications are now available for Oklahoma fifth-grade teachers interested in receiving a fellowship to attend the 2009 Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute June 9 through 16 in the restored capital city of 18th-century Virginia.

Oklahoma City teacher Heather Sparks was named the 2008-09 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year today at a ceremony held at the Oklahoma State Fair. Sparks, an eighth grade algebra and pre-algebra teacher at Oklahoma City's Taft Middle School, was selected for the position from among more than 150 local Teachers of the Year and 12 finalists from across the state.

NCLB Growth Models Approved

U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings in June announced approval of two high-quality growth models, which follow the bright-line principles of No Child Left Behind. Michigan is immediately approved to use the growth model for the 2007-2008 school year. Missouri's growth model is approved on the condition that the state adopt a uniform minimum group size for all subgroups, including students with disabilities and limited English proficient students, in Adequate Yearly Progress determinations for the 2007-2008 school year.
